Secretary began in the time of the proprietary governorships of Maryland in 1661 and was not incorporated as a municipality until 1900. Secretary is named for Henry Sewall, secretary to the third Lord Baltimore and was Lady Jane’s first husband. Following her first husband’s death, Lady Jane went on to become Lady Baltimore by marrying Charles Calvert – the man for which her husband had served as secretary in Dorchester County. Henry Sewall had received an extensive land grant in Dorchester County between two bodies of water – Cabin Creek and Secretary’s Creek, now known as the Warwick River.
